摘要

In India several information systems have been developed in the field of Science and Technology (S&T) during the last two decades, which cover a variety of disciplines. The present study highlights only some of the major information systems in S&T.rnDissemination of information is the most vital component in the scientific, technological and industrial growth of any country. In India, after independence in 1947, the government was committed to the use of S&T for solving various national problems. The scientific research received further impetus in the growth in number of scientific societies, scientific literature and scientific journals. Tremendous capabilities have also been built over the last four decades, which gave due recognition to the well organized library and information services in the programs of national development. Consequently, a fairly moderate infrastructure of information and library services came into existence since 1947. India has now a) four national libraries, b) public library services in almost all states including union territories c) libraries in various colleges, universities and research institutes and also in various government departments and ministries d) publication of Indian National Bibliography since 1958 e) information services at the national level f) information systems in S&T, medical, health and environmental services and various other fields g) library and information science education and research in library schools.
