Within the framework of OECD PRISME program led by the French ‘‘Institut dernRadioprotection et de S?reté Nucléaire’’ (IRSN), fire research is in progress to investigate the firerngrowth and flame spread on electrical cable trays both in open atmosphere and in well-confinedrncompartments (with air vitiation) representative of nuclear facilities. This paper deals with the first partrnof this study, i.e. the characterisation of the fire behaviour of five cable trays in free atmosphere. TwornHalogenated (HC) and two Non-Halogenated (NHC) cables are investigated. This paper shows how trayrnloading and power of burner were adjusted from results of past multiple horizontal trays firesrn(CHRISTIFIRE), in order to obtain heat release rates higher than 1 MW. These cable trays fire testsrnhighlighted two fire categories: fast growth fires with Halogenated cables and slow growth fires withrnNon Halogenated cables. The peaks of HRR are significantly higher for Halogenated cables fires (aboutrn3 MW) than Non-Halogenated cable fires (HRR ranged from 1 to 2 MW). Effect of cables and adjacentrnside wall on fire growths and peaks of HRR are discussed in details. Moreover, high unexpected COrnand soot yields are measured for Halogenated cables fires carried out in open atmosphere. Finally,rnsimple electrical tests were performed to determine time to failure due to thermal stress from cable firernfor each type of cables.
