摘要

The Marine Industry presents unique requirements and opportunities for lightweight, fire resisting/fire retardant materials. Worldwide construction of commercial and naval vessels continues at an accelerating pace and regulations concerning the fire safety of these vessels continues to become increasingly more demanding. Shipbuilding in the United States, while not at an all-time high, continues to be a very viable market for materials. While most construction of large vessels is for the U.S. Navy, commercial applications continue. The first U.S. built cruise ships in over 50 years are underway in Mississippi. Commercial tankers, roll on/roll off ships and ferries are being built, along with offshore oil rigs, tankers and supply vessels. The regulations covering shipbuilding in the U.S. has historically fallen under two agencies - the U.S. Coast Guard for commercial vessels, and the U.S. Navy for Naval vessels. While both consider fire safety of high importance, different performance criteria and testing procedures have been required. This paper will highlight the various requirements for each type of vessel.
