Technologies to reduce smoke generation are continually being introduced in the form of formulation modifications or the use of substitute materials for halogenated additives, such as aluminum trihydrate. The results of the current investigations have shown that formulations can be developed which will yield greatly reduced smoke values versus prior formulations. This will allow continued use of the traditionally accepted halogenated additives while maintaining critical properties of well-established formulations. In addition, the evolution of hydrogen halides from formulations containing halogenated additives have been measured in conjunction with smoke evolution in standard test procedures. This paper will discuss three different resins systems and smoke generation in each; the polyolefins used in wire and cable, epoxies, and nylon 6 formulations.
