The average age of the PC-I girder bridge stock in Michigan is approximately 27 years. They are also the structural system choice of new and replacement bridges in Michigan. In order to manage the health of the aging population, a monitoring procedure (HMP) was developed specifically for the prestressed concrete (PC) I-girder bridges in Michigan. In the HMP procedure an important task was to develop/recommend protection and repair techniques corresponding to each state of health. Currently in Michigan, health monitoring of bridges is based on a rating assigned upon visual inspections performed every two years. The rating is a condition state and assigned for each of the bridge components. In developing the HMP, detailed field inspections of numerous PC-I bridges were performed. These inspections concentrated on documenting the condition of the beam-end for the purposes of developing a vulnerability assessment procedure for the corrosion prone beam-ends. The PC-I girder vulnerability is described based on the condition of the beam-end, which can directly be determined from the bi-annual visual inspection reports. Analysis of the inspection database compiled from the qualitative inspection of 828 girders established the sequence and pattern of deterioration at the beam-end. In most cases the girder end defects were present right after the production. As part of the study a survey of US transportation were performed. None of the agencies appear to be using NDT as part of PC-I bridge inspections. Agencies are not focusing to the prestressed concrete I-beam ends during their inspections. Protection measures for the PC-I beam-ends most often used by agencies were surface treatments and sacrificial anode cathodic protection systems.
