Electrophoretic deposition (EPD) has been used to obtain TiO_2 coatings on three-dimensional Nicalon~R SiC fibrous substrates. Non-aqueous colloidal suspensions of commercially available TiO_2 nanoparticles in acetylaceton with addition of iodine were used. Electrophoretic deposition was carried out for 3 minutes at 30 volts. Strongly adhered TiO_2 deposits with very low residual porosity were obtained. Microscopy observations revealed high penetration of the titania nanoparticles into the fibre preforms. The deposits were sintered at 800℃ for 1 hour in order to obtain relatively dense and uniform TiO_2 coatings covering completely the SiC fibres. Oxidation tests established the effectiveness of the coating at 1000℃ in air atmosphere. After 120 hours the coated fibres showed an increase of weight due to oxidation over twice less than that of uncoated fibres. The TiO_2 coated SiC fibre preforms are attractive materials for manufacturing hot gas filters and as reinforcing elements for ceramic matrix composites.
