Light-emitting chemical reactions (Chemiluminescence, CL) and biological reactions (bioluminescence, BL) have made the transition from laboratory curiosities to core technologies f or clinical laboratory medicine in recent years. The reason for t h is lies in their main advantages: (1)Sensitivity. Generally, CL and BL assays exhibit subpicomolar detection limits due to their high overall quantum yield, especially BL reactions usually have yield range of 10 - 30%. In all cases the detection limit for CL or BL assays is superior to that for fluorescent or colorimetric assay. (2)Linear response. CL or BL is an emission process and hence the response is usually proportional to concentration from t he minimal detectable concentration up to the point where it is no longer possible to maintain an excess of other reactants relative to the analyte. Thus, for instance, in the case of ATP assay by the BL firefly reaction, the response is linear over 6 orders of magnitude.
