This paper describes a methodology developed within a major water company to specify and purchase pumps on a whole life cost basis. A model is described which determines the power consumption, wear, maintenance and repair costs thus enabling selection of the pump with the least LCC (Life Cycle Cost). The model is currently in use to purchase all types of pumps (capital cost circa £2.5 million per annum equating to circa £250 million LCC). The paper outlines the experience of the author in the field of LCC and gives practical guidance on its adoption. Reference is made to the methodologies used for specification of pumps and evaluation of offers using the LCC approach. The paper offers practical guidance to others in the water industry who specify and operate pumps and who wish to implement an LCC approach.
