Check valves are usually fitted on pump-rising main systems to prevent the development of backflow when a pump cuts out. However, some pump-rising main systems fitted with standard top-hinged swing check valves can experience the problem of check-valve slam, which may cause damaging pressure transients. There are two ways of ameliorating the problem: (a) try to reduce the fluid backflow acceleration causing the slamming, (b) replace the check valve with an alternative 'non-slam' valve. Two case studies, one a field study and the other a laboratory study, are presented which describe strategies (a) and (b) above employed to overcome the check valve slam problem.
