The closing policy of butterfly valve at the outlet of pump is important to the transient analysis of a pumping station system. This article presents a genetic algorithm to optimize the closing policy of the butterfly valve. The operational objectives of the algorithm are the corresponding time and opening angle of the closing curve. The highest pressure of the transient analysis gives the values of the objective fitness functions for a series of closing laws. The old series of closing policies is used to generate a new series of closing policies through reproduction, crossover and mutation with certain probabilities. The operation continues until convergence. The valve stroking of butterfly valve at the outlet of pump in a pumping station makes a large effect to prevent the ascension of hydraulic pressure after the pump failure, for different system, it makes a larger different effect, different methods of valve stroking are calculation for test when the pumps system is analyzed, this paper discusses the application of genetic algorithm to the optimization of the closing policy of the butterfly valve in a pumping station.
