The current paper focuses on the dynamic behavior of membrane valves firstly built by American Company CLA-VAL. Later on they were produced in Bulgaria and found various applications as programmable protection against water hammer and as hydraulic regulator. The main valve could be applied with some complementary appliances in many special cases that provide favorable conditions as effective protection of pipelines. Theoretical and experimental studies were carried out by taking into account the main properties of membrane valves as regulator of head and transient processes. By very precise experimental facility the basic geometrical, hydraulic and hydrodynamic characteristics were investigated. The laboratory rig was used to collect data by membrane valves produced in Bulgaria and to establish its properties on occasions of steady or unsteady flow. The utilization of the fullest extent of the membrane valves afford an opportunity of various applications: regulator of debit and pressure in water supply and irrigation systems and effective protection in cases of water hammer in pumping stations. In the present work the properties of the valves are considered in two important cases: a) support of constant inflow and outflow pressure in irrigation systems; b) protection of pipelines during transient processes.
