The Lunnarp pumping station for food industry wastewater has got two self-evacuating, variable speed centrifugal pumps. The pumps have experienced problems ever since the start-up, manifesting themselves as strong pressure fluctuations on the suction side as well as on the pressure side during normal, steady state operation. Pump operation was also accompanied by strong noise and vibrations. The pumps are located about 3 m above the pump sump water level. In order to understand and possibly counteract the problems, dynamic pressure measurements were performed on the pump for a number of operational conditions and for a number of modifications of the pumping station, especially on the suction side. Initial assumptions that the pump problems could be attributed to vapour cavitation due to the geometrical suction head and inappropriate design of the suction pipe proved to be wrong. The problem seemed, however, to be related to the presence of air/gas in the pump. A number of measures were tested but the problem could not be pin-pointed unambiguously. Significant improvement was finally obtained on the suction side by connecting the air valve in the pump with the sump water by means of a small plastic tube.
