This paper describes the application of a systems approach to address future passenger car diesel engine requirements. To meet future emissions targets, it is necessary to minimise engine out feedgas emissions and to ensure the best interaction between in-cyclinder combustion and aftertreatment whilst providing competitive torque, power, refinement and driveability. To improve system operating ranges, a lean NOx aftertreatment system has been explored, consisting of an underfloor catalyst in series with a close coupled catalyst with controlled bypass. The use of in-cylinder post injection and other measures to improve feedgas constituents has been investigated. A detailed study of exhaust gas speciation as a function of both pilot and post in-cylinder injection timing and quantity is also summarised. The paper concludes with a system specification and calibration achieving in excess of 25percent aftertreatment conversion in drive cycle tests.
