New technology is making the task of powertrain optimisation increasingly difficult. The next generation of engines and transmissions presents the engineering team with ever more choices of technology options and control parameter settings, via technologies such as variable valve timing, direct fuel injection, intelligent gearshift patterns and flywheel-mounted electrical devices (FMEDs). The traditional approach of creating a specification for each component and optimising towards that specification is becoming ineffective. The marketplace demands reducing emissions and fuel consumption whilst continuing to expect improving performance, safety, refinement and comfort. In addition, the customer expects new and innovative solutions to their transportation and lifestyle requirements.
