The implementation of the Construction Products Directive (CPD) will potentially be the most important influence upon fire safety related issues and trade within Europe over the next few years. The primary purpose of the Construction Products Directive (CPD) is to remove barriers to trade between the Member States of the European Union and it extends to all materials or products that are used in a construction works and incorporated permanently into the building. The successful implementation of the CPD is dependent upon the development of a system to determine the performances of materials and products in a reliable manner that will promote mutual confidence between countries. This paper explains the ongoing developments to produce European fire test methods in support of the classification of cables for reaction to fire performance. It considers some of the technical issues that the Cable Industry must consider and explores the relevance of the emerging fire test methods in relation to the life safety, property protection and business continuity issues. In addition, the potential for utilisation of the measured fire test parameters within performance-based approaches such as fire engineering are reviewed.
