An illustrative systematic catalog is presented of themal spary coating applications in naval systems and consideration is given to where thermal spray technologies will increase Platform Reliability and Maintainability (R&M) and readiness through enhancing equipment operational availability (A_o) and reducing maintenance issues. Additionally, just-in-time repair of ship components is discussed. Thermal spray deposition technology is offered as a "global tool" to achieve cost-effective preservation, condition-based maintenance (through sensor devices), reclamation, and restoration strategies. Recent developments in process, materials and applications of thermal spray are presented. The concept of prime reliant coatings is also be examined. Surface preparation methodologies, spray processes and protective materials coatings of metal alloys, ceramics and polymer formulations are described and along with discussions on a broad range of marine applications. Also the default benefit of reducing or eliminating environmental hazardous materials (HAZMAT), such as chromic acid, will be discussed as part of the overall desirability of this technological insertion into naval components.
