Multi-Jackbolt Tensioners as an Alternative to Bulk Fastener Torquing

Conventional threaded fasteners like hex bolts translate rotational motion into a clamping force through the application of torque. Tightening large diameter fasteners poses a special challenge because while the strength of the fastener increases to the second power, the torque required for pre-stressing increases to the third power. Perhaps the most common design consideration that Naval Sea Systems Command (NAVSEA) has with fasteners has been maximizing accurate pre-stress of individual fasteners and minimizing the variability of pre-stress in a joint with many fasteners. Multi-Jackbolt Tensioners (MJTs) have been developed by Superbolt~(~R), Inc. to overcome both of these limitations. A variety of users have expressed interest in MJTs and several installations have already been implemented in the Fleet.
