Concepts such as automation and condition based maintenance (CBM) are being investigated and applied as ships look to reduce the operational and maintenance workload on ships. CBM is applied, where cost-effective, to systems or components to allow maintenance as indicated by the actual or predicted future condition of the equipment rather than per schedule. This paper discusses an intuitive condition based maintenance system that has been developed modularly to operate in parallel with an automation system. The system has been under continuous development since 1985 and has been applied successfully to a number of applications. The current MS Windows NT version has been developed as an advanced concept-proving prototype. It demonstrates network connectivity, parametric trending and prediction with neural networks, condition identification via rule processing of parametric data, timing and data management through a control module, and interfacing with an off-the-shelf factory automation human machine interface. The software is designed modularly. This permits enhancements, such as neural classification, to a module with little modification to the remaining code. This paper describes the development of this particular CBM demonstration system and discusses some lessons learned.
