Three regional evapotranspiration models using the complementary relationship approach, the Complementary Relationship Areal Evapotranspiration (CRAE) model, the advection-arid (AA) model, and the Granger and Grey (GG) model, are evaluated against actual regional evapotranspiration derived from a monthly water balance model for Akseu alluvial plain located in the hyperarid Tarim River basin, Northwest China. The results showed that, with original parameters, the CRAE model produces the closest values with the water balance model, while the other two models overestimate actual evapotranspiration. With calibrated parameters, all three models can reflect the annual increasing trends of actual evapotranspiration, but the CRAE model is not better than the other two models, which is different from the performance of the three models in other climate regions conducted by other researchers. The reason is briefly analyzed and discussed.
