A review of literature concerning the definitions for fast fluidization is presented. Although it is now generally accepted that fast fluidization is a flow regime in which the dilute-phase and dense-phase flow coexist, quantitative representation of this definition is still not satisfactory. A number of approaches have been used to define the fast fluidization regime quantitatively, which include definition by choking, minimum pressure drop, transition velocity and solids entrainment mechanism. These approaches require much improvement before they may be applied with confidence. Further research needs are indicated which would enable improved definition for the regime of fast fluidizaton.
