Information about the characteristics of clusters was obtained from the time-series of fiber-optical probe signals after introducing a model-based threshold level which separates the higher concentrated cluster phase from the surrounding lean suspension phase. Local mass fluxes calculated from measured solids volume concentrations and velocities were integrated over the riser's cross-sectional area and the threshold level was determined such that the resulting net mass flux equalled the separately measured external solids circulation rate G_s.
