The solids-size segregation was studied in a circulating fluidized bed boiler furnace. Most of the vertical size segregation occurs between the bottom bed and the upper part of the furnace. The decay in particle-size with height in the upper part of the furnace is significant but much lower than the decay in solids concentration. The internal recirculation of char in the solids wass-layers exceeds the external recirculation of char.
