Previous research has demonstrated that bubbling and circulating beds can be accurately scaled using models based on the simplified scaling parameters proposed by Glicksman et al. (1). The importance of the density ratio is examined in this work by comparing beds with different density ratios while retaining equivalence of the other scaling parameters. These comparisons show clear differences in the hydrodynamics of both bubbling and circulating beds. The density ratio also had a significant effect on the bubbling-slugging regime transition as well as choking. Thus, the solid-to-gas density ratio must be matched to achieve accurate flow simulations.
