A multi-stage gas-solids contactor may be operated continuously or dynamically. Dynamic operation requires that a tray containing a fluidized bed of solids be emptied in a short time compared to the solids residence time. In this study sand of mean size 500 #mu#m was transferred by means of L_valves from an upper tray to the tray immediately below. It was demonstrated that a tray could be emptied rapidly. Additional data was obtained to maintain comparability with previous workers.
