Distribution of Vibrio unlnificus in the coastal waters of Todyo Bay, Japan was investigated during the period fro February 1993 to January 1994. Of a total of 13 325 bacteria isolated from seawater and sediment samples, and oyster and goby specimens, only 61 strains were identified as V. vulnificus based on phenotypic characters and the amplified cytooxin-hemolysin gene by the PCR ethods. All the 61 strains were further confirmed to be V. vulnificus by a DNA-DNA hybridization method. These reslts strongly suggest that the PCR method is useful for identification of this organism V. vulnificus was detected from seawater and sediment samples, and oyster and goby specimens during the period from June to September. These results suggest that V. vulnificus occurs widely in the coastal waters of Tokyo Bay in the summer season.
