Originally restricted to South and Central Americ as well as the Southern USA, Pomacea snails (Mollusca, Prosobranchia, Ampullariidae) were introduced into most Asian countries in teh 1980s for faring purposes and through the aquarium trade. Unexpectedly, the snails have turned into a serious rice pest. Current and potential integrated pest management (IPM) practices against the snail include direct (introduction of fish, herding of ducks, hand picking, crushing of snail eggs) and indirect measures (water management, delayed trasplanting of rice, screening of water inlets). To determinet the impact of different management strategies on the dynamics of a snail population, we developed individualbased and stage-structured simulation models. They permit the simulation of different irrigation schemes, fish and duck densities, and management-induced snail and egg mortalities at different stages of rice development.
