摘要

For individuals of a fishery populations, age determination is essential for their resource assessment asnd management and is necessary for studies both on their growth and mortality. For bivalves, usually age can be estimated by statistical approaches based on analysing the number of modes in length-requrency distribution. Another approach is counting the growth rings on the out or inner of the shell. According to our large scale surveys along Shandong offshore and observation on the shell morphology, we discovered that the forms of ligament groove, hinge teeth etc. are related closely to the age of Scapharca broughtonii. It has been reported that counting the numbers of the ligament groove or hinge teeth are new methods to estimate the age of Scapharca broughtonii. Compared with the traditional ones, the new methods are more simple, easier and more accurate.
