This paper describes details of a hydrodynamic wave-current model and its applications to a tidal inlet (the Barra Nova) in the Algarve, southern Portugal. The model, as a core part of a Q3D model, is capable of computing wave characteristics and depth-averaged tidal and wave-driven currents, allowing for the effects of wind, wave diffraction and refraction, wave breaking and wave-current interaction. Application of the model was made to a highly dynamic tidal inlet - the Barra Nova to study the significance of wave-current interaction by running the model dynamically with both long waves (tides) and short waves (wind waves), as well as in a static mode with frozen tidal states. This newly-opened tidal inlet and its vicinity has been used during 1999 for a four-month intensive field campaign under Project INDIA (Inlet Dynamics Initiative: Algarve) funded by EU MAST III Research Programme. The model results obtained from dynamic runs were first compared with the field data measured by a number of remote sensing instruments, including X-Band Radar, and then with those obtained from static runs, which demonstrated the significance of the wave-current interaction on wave distributions for situations where strong tidal currents were presented.
