Steel (BOS) slag is an industrial by-product of the basic oxygen steelmaking process. Traditionally, large volumes of air-cooled blast furnace slag have been used as a roadstone. Now, most is granulated for use as a cementitious binder and the use of steel (BOS) slag must be increased to make up the resulting shortfall. This paper outlines recent activity to establish a high level of customer assurance in the properties of steel (BOS) slag so as to broaden the potential market. The topics illustrated include weathering and stability, aggregate properties, asphalt mixture characteristics, polished stone value, and thin surfacings. Steel (BOS) slag is a competent aggregate that can be used without compromising the integrity of asphalts.
