This work presents a determination of the phase change boundary as well as temperature distribution through the workpiece during phase welding process. An approach based on the optimization metod of two-dimensional nonlinear inverse phase change problems is presented. Some exemplary results are presented for plasma arc welding of stainless steel type AISI-304. Numerical experiments are made to study the influence of sensor locations. This work leads to understand well the mechanism of heat transfer in the phase change problem without any analysis in the molten zone.
