Excavation, and in particular trenching and pipe-laying, presents a hazardous working environment for humans. Many hazards exist including the possibility of collapsing trench walls, heavy objects accidentally being dropped into the opening, and buried utilities (e.g., power lines) being damaged during the operation. This paper will present a framework for the potential economic benefit assessment that can be used for a remote pipe laying technology. The analysis will include actual data from field observations and tests. It will also describe the newest version of teleoperated pipe manipulator (PipeMan).
