Representing a continental-marine transition, the mangrove ecosystem is very susceptible to the tidal fluctuations and its distinctive vegetation plays an important role in preventing erosion and contamination processes. The study area is located inside Petroflex's industrial plant at the Guanabara Bay's northwest shoreline, within an endangered mangrove ecosystem. Petroflex S.A. is a petrochemical company and an important producer of synthetic rubber. All the solid waste produced for almost 40 years was buried or inadequately disposed in the area. This research aims at the characterization of groundwater contamination, with focus on the hydrodynamic and hydrochemical interaction between seawater and groundwater. Results show a dominant groundwater flow direction to the Guanabara Bay, with a chloride content of nearly 15 g/L, while the adjacent seawater body has a Cl concentration of 32 g/L. Total petroleum hydrocarbon (TPH) and poli-cyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAH) measurements showed no detectable amounts in groundwater, except for one sample with a 0,2 mg/L concentration of naphthalene. The organic clay layer showed TPH and PAH contents above the detection limits, in a depth ranging from 2 to 10 m, with higher values from 4 to 6 m depth. This hints for the filtering and retention processes provided by the mangrove typical soils.
