Di-(2-ethylhexyl)phthalate (DEHP) is a phthalate ester used as a plasticizer, being one of the most frequently used additives in the manufacture of flexible polyvinyl chloride. Phthalate plasticizers are endocrine disruptor compounds (ECDs) i.e. exogenous substances that cause adverse health effects in intact organisms or progeny, associated to alarming effects on reproduction and developmental processes. This work proposes to study the capacity of infiltration of DEHP into the subsoil resulting from superficial discharge and the adsorption of DEHP in a tropical Brazilian soil. The capacity of the phthalate to permeate through unsatu-rated soil was verified by means of a visual infiltration test. The adsorption of phthalate in the soil was studied through saturated column tests and batch-tests. DEHP infiltrated easily through the unsaturated soil with high porosity and was almost totally adsorbed at the applied concentration in the column tests. Results showed that batch tests procedures must be revised for DEHP.
