Polycrystalline samples of (l-x)(ZrO_2)-x(Y_2O_3) [x = 0.11; 0.40] were examined by High Resolution Transmission Electron Microscopy. Long range ordering of point defects in super-structures was investigated. The material was prepared by precipitation from inorganic aqueous solutions. At a composition x = 0.11, domains with super-periodicity, within the fluorite phase, were imaged with atomic resolution. The presence of detectable domains depended on the thermal history of the samples: the domains were observed in samples annealed at 1450 C but not at 600 C or 1700 C. Lattice spacings in the domains corresponded to a pyrochlore type phase. At x = 0.40, a phase with large unit cell related to the fluorite and pyrochlore, was observed. The importance of these results in regimes of purely ionic and of mixed electrical conduction was considered.
