A pyrene-bearing vinyl monomer (2) and compound 3, which is a copolymer of 2 and acrylamide, were synthesized. Transmission electron microscopic study revealed that both 2 and 3 dissolved/dispersed single walled carbon nanotubes in water by direct sonication with an ultrasonic cleaner. Atomic force microscope images indicated that individually dissolved SWNTs and bundled SWNTs coexisted in a solutions/dispersion of SWNTs-3. The dissolution/dispersion of SWNTs by 2 and 3 in water would be due to the physical adsorption of the pyrene moieties onto the sidewall of the nanotubes. Upon heating up to 49-50 ℃,an aqueous solution of SWNTs-2 was found to produce a precipitate, which was readily separated from the solution/dispersion by filtration as a solid nanocomposite of SWNTs-2.
