Gas-containing layers distribute widely in Shanghai Area, in which soil is unsaturated duo to the high-pressure gas. The data obtained from the laboratory tests is analyzed. A consolidation law of the unsaturated soil is obtained as the gas drained out slowly. The empirical formulas of stress-strain and strain-time are obtained as well. The test results show that the plastic deformation occurs first, then following the elastic deformation. The mechanism of engineering disasters caused by the high-pressure gas are also discussed. Furthermore, some countermeasures are proposed.
