Unsaturated soils comprise of three phases: soil solids and pores filled with water and air, whereas in saturated soils the pores are completely filled with water only. Conventional techniques of measuring volume changes in saturated soils cannot be used Unsaturated soils because under loading the changes occur in both the volumes of air and water for Unsaturated soils. The measurement of these volume changes poses additional challenges and complexities compared to saturated soils. In this paper, key issues in measuring of changes in volume of Unsaturated soils in triaxial testing are outlined and discussed.
