Contamination in soils and sediment, is very heterogeneous. There are two sources of heterogeneity: fundamental, because of differences in the composition of particles that comprise the population; and distributional, the nonrandom distribution of particles due to gravity, chemical attractions, human activity, air resistance, etc. Current environmental sampling of soils and sediment utilizes "discrete" sampling”. These samples are unrepresentative, highly variable, and unrepeatable. The resulting data is extremely difficult to interpret and legally indefensible. Alternatively, collecting and preparing a multi-incremental sample of perhaps 30 sub-samples over an exposure area provides a single sample that is representative, repeatable, and legally defensible.
