Advanced Processing of Time Domain Reflectometry for Improved Slope Stability Monitoring

Time Domain Reflectometry (TDR) has been utilized to monitor slope movement in a variety of geotechnical settings including highway cuts, rail beds, and open pit mines. Until now, the interpretation of TDR results for detecting slope movement and identifying the location of shear planes has been limited to visual inspection of the plots of cable reflectance versus distance along the cable. We describe novel signal processing techniques that extract reliable indications of slope movement from the TDR data and present a comparison to both slope inclinometer results and visual interpretation of TDR. In this comparison, the more advanced signal processing yielded reliable indications of slope movement well earlier than both visually interpreted TDR and slope inclinometer results.
