A remotely-operated underwater impact device for shear wave velocity (V_S) profiling of near-surface sediments (0.3 to 7 m depth) using Scholte-type interface waves was developed and tested. The effectiveness of the device was demonstrated through terrestrial tests comparing the performance of the remote source to a conventional impact hammer source. Data were collected and analyzed using the Spectral-Analysis of Surface Waves (SASW) methodology. Underwater measurements were conducted with the remote source and both contacting and non-contacting instrumentation. The results from these studies demonstrate the effectiveness of this system for generating Scholte wave dispersion data for nearsurface profiling applications underwater.
