By using a newly developed plane strain compression testing system, a series of tests were conducted on rectangular prismatic specimens having a dimension of 16~*6~*8 cm to investigate the effects of large amplitude cyclic loading on the deformation and strength properties of cement-treated sands. Significant effect of bedding error on the externally measured axial strains was observed. The locally measured lateral strains in the restrained direction accumulated up to about 0.2 % on the extension side, due possibly to effect of bedding error at the side interfaces including lubrication layers, which in turn reduced the side friction effectively. Comparisons were made between monotonic and cyclic plane strain compression tests to evaluate the differences on the peak strength of specimens with and without a cyclic loading history. No evidence of a reduction in the peak strength of specimens subjected to large amplitude cyclic loading was found. The specimen that showed the lowest peak strength failed during cyclic loading, and it was confirmed that a shear band was developed in a progressive manner during this period.
