Results are presented of applications of the experimental techniques of 2-D and 3-D Digital Image Correlation (DIC) for measuring displacements locally within laboratory specimens of sand. The 2D-DIC analyses were used to analyze displacement patterns associated with shear banding in plane strain compression, and offered intense, detailed data highlighting the non-linearity of displacement fields in persistent shear bands. The 3D-DIC measurements of deforming triaxial specimens provided boundary feedback data in the development of a method to calibrate soil constitutive models with spatially varying parameters. The resulting quantification of soil heterogeneity should contribute to the development of more thorough, probabilistic descriptions of soil behavior.
