Highway and airfield pavement design and performance are strongly affected by thernmechanical properties of the foundation soil and the unbound base and subbase material(s). Hence,rnseveral critical aspects such as the highway pavement design and the reporting of the airfield pavementrnbearing capacity are related to the performance and the properties of these materials. The factrnthat the background of the concepts currently used for these purposes comes mostly from investigationsrnmade without the presence of the upper (bound) pavement layer(s), their effect on the performancernof soil and unbound materials in a complete pavement structure is often underestimated.rnAiming to further discuss this fact, this paper summarizes the results from related research activitiesrnin conjunction with the experience gained from the applications of such concepts in practice.
