In March 2002 REDUCT & Lobbe completed acomprehensive field research project for theSaskatchewan Petroleum Technology Research Center(SPTRC). This research project addressed the potentialapplication of intelligent systems for heavy oilproduction in Western Canada. The objectives of thetests were to: 1) assess the opportunities and identifyapplication areas for intelligent systems; 2) develop anddemonstrate a specialized, site-specific intelligentsystem; and 3) assess the performance and potentialbenefits of the implemented system.Six applications were identified as candidates for AIsystems, and Progressing Cavity Pumps (PCPs)monitoring, diagnosis and control was selected fordemonstration tests. The overall conclusions from thetests were that intelligent systems have the ability to: 1)diagnose well instabilities that a SCADA system alonecannot recognize; 2) notify operators about wells that require closer scrutiny (review); 3) provide decisionsupport with respect to recovery from different types offailures. These benefits are critical in terms ofoptimizing PCP operations and retaining and makingavailable the knowledge of experienced staff.The value of the potential benefits of a PCPintelligent system was estimated at up to $ 4,000 perwell per year, or several million dollars per year for amid-size PCP operation. Given that the cost of thesoftware represents only a fraction of SCADAinfrastructure expenditures, the implemented intelligentsystem could significantly leverage the SCADA system inmanagement and operations of PCP wells.
