Poly(vinyl chloride) (PVC), one of the synthetic polymers produced in large scale, shows a complex thermal behaviour that is influenced by a number of factors, e.g. irregular structures. Different mechanisms of decomposition are considered since they influence recycling technologies including pyrolysis. The general features of the thermal degradation mechanisms of PVC confirm that at temperatures necessary for its processing and end-use applications PVC undergoes degradation by dehydrochlorination, followed by the formation of double bond sequences, which are responsible for discoloration and a reduction in the polymer's mechanical properties. Furthermore, the polyene sequences are active in secondary reactions leading to crosslinking and the formation of aromatic pyrolysates.
