Sodium salt of poly(styrenesulfonate) acid (NaPSS) as anionic type polyelectrolyte was obtained during the sulfonation process using sulfuric acid as sulphonating agent and Ag_2SO_4 as catalyst. The products were precipitated in form of sodium salt in reaction with Na_2CO_3. Sodium salt of poly(styrenesulfonate) acid (NaPSS) has good flocculation properties. The influence of temperature and time of reaction on the properties of the products (1R spectra, intrinsic viscosity, elemental analysis) were studied. The obtained products of the reactions of sulfonation of expanded polystyrene wastes NaPSS were successfully used as flocculants in treatment of the model colloid system -ferrum (Ⅲ) hydroxide, which could be compared with industrial wastes such as water from mining companies. Application of these products caused a significant decrease of turbidity of examined solutions. It was also found that effectiveness of the flocculation process depends on the properties of the synthesized polyelectrolyte. The influence of the average molecular weight and sulfonate group content were observed.
