The flotation of Pb~(2+) and N_1~(2+) with sodium dodecylsulfate (SDS) was studied with the aim of determining the parameters that most affect the kinetics of metal removal. The study was conducted with 1 L of solution at pH=4 containing equal concentration of metals (1×10~(-4) M) and 0.4% v/v ethylic alcohol as frother; the metalxollector molar ratio was varied from 1:1 to 1:4. The experiments were performed in a 5.7 cm diameter column using an air velocity of 0.024 m/min. Results show the kinetics of the flotation is first order with respect to collector concentration (SDS), with a rate constant depending on the gas rate. The flotation selectivity was dictated by the ionic radius: Pb~(2+) (r= 1.33 A) floated faster than N_1~(2+) (r=0.63 A). The presence of dietylenetriamine (DETA) enhanced the flotation of N_1~(2+) but adversely affected that of Pb~(2+). When both metals are present, no flotation selectivity is observed.
