摘要

The phenomenon of globalisation rarely exists without increases in construction activity. This is no more evident than in Developing Countries. As a country develops its infrastructure the demand for power supplies results in the development of oil and gas installations. The resulting construction projects often require levels of health and safety not usually found in these countries and a different approach to the management of health and safety is required. In order to explore these issues, Loughborough University, supported by the European Construction Institute (ECI), visited major construction projects in Africa, Asia, India, the Middle East and Eastern Europe to observe the health and safety measures employed and interview management staff. In addition UK-based people with 'overseas' experience were interviewed and surveyed with questionnaires and a number of focus groups were held to examine the use of construction equipment in developing countries, the qualities of developing countries and the workforces and the type of information required to manage health and safety. The site visits highlighted language and illiteracy problems among twelve main issues affecting the management of health and safety. It was noticed that photographs and images were increasingly being used to communicate messages through health and safety posters and handbooks. This issue was also raised in the focus groups and is being discussed with visual anthropologists at the university to see if the images are being used appropriately. With the forthcoming Olympics in 2012 in the UK expected to increase the use of non-English speaking labour, Loughborough is working with various bodies to assess existing visual methods of conveying health and safety information.
