With vast amounts of readily processed sweet gas already produced, remaining global natural gasrnresources are increasingly sour in nature, many with a CO_2 content well in excess of 30%. At thernsame time, environmental concerns over greenhouse gas emissions limit the options for largernscale CO_2 disposal to essentially underground reinjection.rnThe Controlled Freeze ZoneTM (CFZ?) technology provides for the single-step removal of CO_2rnas well as other acid gas components present in the feed, and providing them as a high pressurernliquid that can be readily reinjected for geosequestration or EOR purposes. Thus, the CFZ?rnprocess is able to reduce the cost of developing of sour gas resources, thereby increasing thernsupply of available clean burning natural gas, while protecting the environment.rnExxonMobil piloted the CFZ? concept at a 600 kscfd pilot plant facility and is now starting uprna 14 Mscfd commercial demonstration plant (CDP) in Wyoming, USA. The CDP will processrnfeed streams with CO_2 contents ranging up to 65% and H2S contents of up to 35% at pressuresrnup to 600 psia. The CDP will also demonstrate the advantages of discharging the sour gasrncomponents as a high pressure liquid stream by reinjecting the acid gas components via anrnexisting acid gas injection (AGI) facility.rnExxonMobil has also developed conceptual designs for deployment of the CFZ? concept tornhandle production at several potential sour gas developments around the globe.rnThis paper will provide a review of the CFZ? technology, details concerning how to employ therntechnology over the applicable range of sour gas compositions, and examples showing thernproposed process arrangement for specific sour gas developments.
