A chemical vapor infiltration (CVI)-SiC coating reinforced by carbon fiber about 0.4 mm thick is formed onto a 2-D woven C/C substrate. The surface of the 2-D woven C/C substrate is firstly covered by carbon felt (paper) with polycarbosilane slurry containing ZrC powder. And then the carbon felt was coated with a CVI-SiC made by CVI process. The CVT-SiC layer without reinforcement shows many cracks on its surface. To the contrary, the number of the cracks of the fiber-reinforced SiC layer mentioned above is much reduced. The beneficial effect of the fiber-reinforced SiC layer is mainly to reduce the number of the cracks owing to the reduction of the mismatching of the coefficient of thermal expansions (CTEs) and the thermal stress between the substrate and the SiC coating.
